VW T6 Barn Door to Tailgate Conversion: OEM Parts, Wiring & BCM Coding

3 June 2026Electrics

The Problem

The T6 left the factory with barn doors and the owner wanted a tailgate, requiring both a physical bolt-on swap of the rear bodywork components and a full rewiring of the tailgate electrical system. The main obstacle was identifying which wires on the new tailgate loom corresponded to the van's existing connectors, as no pinout documentation was available.

Note on generation: This guide is based on a T6 conversion. T6.1 vans may differ in loom connectors and BCM/gateway coding paths, so if you have a T6.1, confirm parts and coding apply to your generation before ordering or coding (confirm this applies to your T6 generation).

Solution

  1. Source the required OEM parts: tailgate, tailgate wiring loom, gas struts, gas strut body-mounting kit, threshold cover, and rear D-pillar trim pieces. Order each by its VW OEM part number to guarantee the correct fitment — give your VIN to a VW parts desk or use a VW part-finder, as numbers vary by build, glass type, and wiper spec (verify part number before ordering for every component, and confirm whether T6.1 part numbers differ from T6).
  2. Bolt the tailgate onto the van body — all components mount directly with no fabrication beyond drilling mounting holes using 8mm and 11mm metal drill bits.
    • Treat every drilled hole with metal primer immediately before fitting parts.
  3. If any factory trim, glass, or panel you are removing or relocating is bonded with sikaflex sealant (for example bonded D-pillar trim or rear glass), cut through the sikaflex bead with braided fishing line used as a cheese wire before attempting to lift the part — levering bonded panels without cutting the sealant will distort or crack them. Clean off old sikaflex residue and re-seal with fresh adhesive on reassembly.
  4. Plug in the original barn-door wiring loom temporarily and leave it hanging loose to confirm basic tailgate operation before committing to permanent wiring.
    • The tailgate can be opened by pulling the interior latch even without an interior release switch fitted.
  5. Cut the block connector off the new tailgate loom, then use a continuity tester to bell out each wire and identify which pin is which.
    • Use the old barn-door loom as a reference to trace each circuit back to its corresponding connector in the van.
  6. Match and join wires, using Wago lever connectors for initial test connections before making permanent joins.
  7. Tuck and route all wiring above the rear corner D-pillar trim once confirmed working.
  8. Code the BCM to enable the exterior handle, remote locking, and rear wiper functions using OBD Eleven Pro or VCDS. The original conversion did not record the exact adaptation channel paths or values, and these can differ between control module software versions and between T6 and T6.1. Before coding, confirm the correct long-coding bytes/bits and adaptation channels for the central electrics (BCM) module on your specific vehicle using the current VCDS/OBD Eleven labels, or have a VW specialist auto-electrician perform the coding (verify the exact adaptation channels and values with a VW dealer or specialist before changing any coding, and confirm this applies to your T6 generation).
