VW Transporter (CXEB) DPF Soot Mass Jumping — Pressure Sensor Diagnosis and Next Steps

3 June 2026Engine & Mechanical

The Problem

On a VW Transporter T6 fitted with the 2.0 TDI CXEB engine, the DPF soot mass was jumping erratically during drives, causing abnormal regeneration behaviour. A new DPF differential pressure sensor was fitted but produced identical symptoms to the original. Note: this procedure is specific to the VW Transporter and the CXEB engine — the sensor channels and ErWin engine grouping below will not match Sprinter, Transit or other platforms.

Solution

This applies to the VW Transporter T6 with the 2.0 TDI CXEB engine.

  1. Connect a VW-capable diagnostic tool and observe the live DPF soot mass value during a drive. VCDS or OBD Eleven are the better choices here — they expose far more of the VW-specific live data channels (measuring value blocks) used in this diagnosis than generic apps such as Carista, and both are widely used in the UK VW community. Carista will show basic soot mass but not the full channel set you need for steps 3–4.
    • Erratic or jumping soot mass values point toward a faulty DPF differential pressure sensor.
  2. Replace the DPF differential pressure sensor — it is plug-and-play and requires no calibration after fitting. Order the correct sensor for the CXEB 2.0 TDI (verify part number against your VIN with a VW dealer or ETKA before ordering). Confirm you are buying the differential (delta) pressure sensor and not the exhaust gas pressure/temperature sensor, as the two are easily confused.
  3. If the same symptoms continue after a known-good sensor, read the oil ash percentage in your tool.
    • A value such as 52.29% means the DPF is roughly half-loaded with ash. Ash accumulates permanently and is not burned off during regeneration, so it skews the pressure-to-soot calculation as it builds. Around half-life is not normally a cause for replacement on its own, but as the figure climbs toward the manufacturer's limit (typically near 100%) the filter must be professionally cleaned (ash bake/flush) or replaced — a regen cycle will not clear it. After cleaning or replacement the ash and soot counters must be reset with the diagnostic tool. Confirm the exact ash threshold and reset procedure for the CXEB engine with VW or your DPF specialist.
  4. If the problem is still unresolved, download the Self Study Programme for your engine family via ErWin (VW's public technical document portal) to identify every sensor input used in the soot mass calculation, then check each for plausible values across a full driving cycle.
    • For the CXEB engine, select Engine Group 6 in ErWin.
