VW MIB2 clock stuck 00:00 fix with SD firmware update
2 June 2026Vehicle Faults
The Problem
The radio display was stuck showing 00:00, occasionally flickering to the correct time. A firmware bug in MIB2 PQ units fitted to VW, Seat, and Skoda vehicles (2015–2020) causes a hexadecimal counter in the cluster's communication chip to overflow after several years, producing a 00:00 or 06:28 clock display.
Solution
-
Press and hold the menu button on the head unit, select "Software Update / Versions", and note the exact software version string shown (e.g. MST2_EU_VW_PQ_P0241T).
-
Download the firmware update file matching your version prefix. These files are hosted on enthusiast firmware repositories — the mibsolution portal (login: guest / guest) and the Digital Eliteboard forum at https://www.digital-eliteboard.com (the firmware lives in its MIB/MST car-audio sub-forums; you will need to register and search the version prefix, as exact thread URLs change over time). If a link has moved, search the version string (e.g. "MST2_EU_VW_PQ_P0255T") on either site to relocate the current download.
- VW 02xxT → MST2_EU_VW_PQ_P0255T / VW 03xxT → MST2_EU_VW_PQ_P0369T / VW 04xxT → MST2_EU_VW_PQ_P0480T / Seat 02xxT → MST2_EU_SE_PQ_P0255T / Seat 03xxT → MST2_EU_SE_PQ_P0369T / Seat 04xxT → MST2_EU_SE_PQ_P0478T / Skoda 02xxT → MST2_EU_SK_PQ_0255T
-
Format a full-size SD card (8–32 GB) to FAT32, then extract the downloaded firmware archive and copy all contents — folders and the metainfo2 file — to the root directory of the card.
- On Windows, a third-party formatting tool may be needed for larger cards, as Windows may only offer exFAT or NTFS; do not use a microSD-to-SD adapter, and wait for each file to finish copying before ejecting, as errors on the large CPU files will cause the update to fail.
-
Before inserting the card, verify that the upper-right corner of the touchscreen responds to taps, as you will need to tap a back arrow to complete the update.
- If that area is unresponsive, either replace the digitizer (part TDO-WVGA0633F00039, widely available in the UK for around £15–20) or confirm installation via the radio's adaptation channel in control unit 5F using a diagnostic tool such as VCDS, OBDEleven, or Car Scanner via ELM327 with an XOR calculator.
-
Insert the SD card, press and hold the menu button, select "Software Update / Versions", tap "Update", select the SD card, select the update, then tap Start and Next.
- Keep the ignition on throughout — the radio will restart multiple times and the process takes approximately 5–20 minutes. Do NOT switch off the ignition, start the engine, or otherwise interrupt power once flashing has begun: losing power mid-flash can corrupt the firmware and leave the unit bricked in an unrecoverable state requiring professional repair or replacement. If your battery is weak, connect a battery charger/maintainer before starting.
-
When a screen appears listing entries each marked "ok", tap the back arrow in the upper-right corner, then tap Cancel, and remove the SD card after the radio restarts.
- The clock should now display the correct time.
-
Note: this step only applies if your head unit was previously fitted with a component protection patch — typically a second-hand unit, a unit transferred from another vehicle, or one that has already been modified. If you bought the van new with this radio fitted from the factory, this will not apply to you and you can skip it. If the screen shows "Component Protection Active" and there is no audio after the update, the flash has reset the unit to factory state and the component protection patch that was previously applied needs to be re-applied.
- Contact the original source of your head unit (the seller or installer who supplied it) to obtain the patch or unlock file that was previously applied.
What you’ll need
Tools
- Computer or laptop with SD card reader
- Third-party FAT32 formatting tool (e.g. Rufus or guiformat) for Windows
- OBD diagnostic interface — VCDS, OBDEleven, or ELM327 (optional, only needed if touchscreen upper-right corner is unresponsive)
- XOR calculator (optional, used with diagnostic interface to confirm update via control unit 5F adaptation)
Parts
- Full-size SD card, FAT32 formatted, 8–32 GB recommended — SanDisk Ultra 32GB (silver)
- Touchscreen digitizer for MIB2 head unit (only required if upper-right touchscreen corner is unresponsive) — TDO-WVGA0633F00039 (part number, available on Amazon, eBay, AliExpress)
