VW T6.1 Direct TPMS Retrofit: Wiring Guide and Post-Install Fault Fixes

3 June 2026Electrics

The Problem

After fitting a direct TPMS kit, the van displayed a persistent orange tyre warning icon and a CAN controller fault about additional installations detected that could not be cleared through the touchscreen. The kit was powered and the sensors were transmitting, but pressure values were not appearing and multiple controllers showed red in an autoscan.

Solution

  1. Identify a permanently live fuse slot in the driver's fusebox using a multimeter — this is Terminal 30 (permanent 12v supply), which is a power terminal designation, not fuse number 30. Connect the TPMS unit positive wire here.

  2. Run a ground wire to chassis.

  3. Splice the TPMS CAN high and CAN low wires into the vehicle CAN pair behind the instrument cluster. On VW Transporter looms the CAN bus is run as an orange twisted pair — CAN high is typically orange/black and CAN low typically orange/brown — but the exact connector, cavity (pin) number and which CAN circuit to tap vary by build. Identify the correct connector and cavities from the official VW wiring diagram for your VIN (ELSA/ErWin) before cutting any wire — do not guess (verify connector ID and pin numbers against the wiring diagram before splicing). Solder and heat-shrink the joints.

  4. Drive for a short distance to allow the wheel sensors to register — pressure values will not appear immediately at first power-up.

  5. If a CAN controller fault about additional installations detected persists, contact the kit supplier for the firmware update specific to your kit and apply it (verify the correct kit/firmware reference with the supplier — the original source did not record the brand or part number).

  6. In VCDS, open module 19 (CAN-GATEWAY), go to the Installation List, and tick the checkbox for address 65 (tyre pressure) to register the TPMS module on the bus.
