How to Manually Update VW Discover Media 2 Sat-Nav Maps (Transporter T6 / T6.1)
3 June 2026Suspension, Steering & Brakes
The Problem
The official VW map update tool has been discontinued, leaving owners with a genuine VW map SD card and no obvious way to install new map releases manually. Full Europe map packages have also grown beyond the capacity of the standard 16 GB card, and the head unit will not recognise a generic blank replacement card because it checks for VW firmware on the card.
Solution
Scope: this procedure applies to the Discover Media 2 (MIB2) unit as fitted to the Transporter T6 (2015–2019) and T6.1 (2019 on). Discover Media 2 also appears on the T5 facelift and several VW car platforms; the steps are similar but folder names and card sizes can differ, so (confirm this applies to your generation) before deleting anything.
- Obtain the latest Discover Media 2 (MIB2) map archive (.7z) for your region. The correct source is the official VW map portal accessed via your VW account / 'We Connect' or your local dealer (verify the current official download URL before downloading, as the standalone update tool has been withdrawn — do not download VW map data from unofficial file-sharing sites).
- Extract the .7z archive on your computer using 7-Zip or similar. This produces a folder named 'Maps' (confirm the exact folder name matches the one already present on your card before continuing).
- On the genuine VW map SD card, delete ONLY the existing map data folder (typically the 'Maps' folder). Do NOT delete any firmware, metadata, or hidden system files on the card — removing these can stop the head unit from recognising the card. Reformatting the card is not necessary and should be avoided, as it will wipe the VW firmware. If you are unsure which files are map data versus firmware, copy the entire card contents to your computer as a backup first.
- Copy or drag and drop the new 'Maps' folder into the root of the SD card.
- Insert the card into the head unit; it will detect and load the new maps automatically. Allow several minutes for the first load.
- If the full Europe package exceeds the capacity of your standard card (commonly 16 GB), you will need a 32 GB card that already carries the genuine VW firmware, because the unit will not accept a generic blank card. There is no published VW retail part number for a blank 32 GB firmware card, and VW does not officially supply one for self-flashing (verify availability with a VW dealer or a reputable VW navigation specialist before purchasing). Treat any pre-flashed card sold online with caution and confirm it is sourced legitimately.
