VW T6 EU6 2019 cruise control and MFSW retrofit guide
3 June 2026Vehicle Faults
The Problem
The van had no cruise control or multi-function steering wheel despite being otherwise well-equipped, and a £150 factory option had not been specified. The owner installed a genuine VW CCS stalk kit and wiring correctly but a VCDS session could not code the ECU — it returned error 30 regardless of ignition state — leaving cruise control non-functional.
Solution
- Buy a genuine VW CCS stalk kit (includes replacement stalks and a wiring loom with instructions) and fit the stalks following the included wiring guide. (verify part number before ordering — source the genuine VW kit for your exact T6 build to avoid non-OEM alternatives)
- Use a genuine Ross-Tech HEX-V2 interface running VCDS (tested on 19.6.0) to code the BCM (module 09) and instrument cluster — these modules accept the code without issues on EU6 vans. Note: the HEX-V2 is Ross-Tech's own genuine interface, not a third-party clone.
- Use a VCP clone (5.5.1) to code the ECU — this is the step VCDS fails on EU6 vans, returning error 30; VCP accepts it on the first attempt.
- Check the fuse is correctly seated in the +12v supply wire added to the CCS buttons — a wrongly inserted fuse kills all button signals with no other indication.
- For the MFSW: run the LIN wire from the steering column connector to pin 36 (T73b) on the BCM, then in VCDS module 09 set Byte 09 Bit 3 (declares MFSW is installed) and Byte 29 Bit 6 (routes MFSW LIN to pin 36).
- If cruise control activates with dashes on the display but will not SET while driving, correct the speed index coding in module 17 (instrument cluster).
- A mismatch between GPS speed and wheel speed triggers a shutdown logged as speed signal failure during initialization. The speed index value is determined by your gearbox final drive and tyre rolling circumference, so it must match the speed index already held in the engine (module 01) and transmission coding. Read that value first, then set module 17 to the same value so both signals agree. Do not guess — confirm the correct speed index for your exact gearbox and wheel/tyre combination against your factory build sheet or with a VW dealer before changing it. (verify with manufacturer or dealer)
- If fitting an MFSW to a van where cruise control was already working on the stalks and stalk CC stops working afterwards, move the MFSW LIN wire from pin 36 to pin 17 on the BCM and set Byte 29 Bit 6 back to 0.
