VW T6 H4 to H7 headlight swap: plug and play guide

3 June 2026Electrics

The Problem

The factory H4 headlights on the VW T6 produce poor light output considered unsafe for driving on unlit roads at night. The owner moved straight to replacing the entire headlight assemblies rather than attempting a bulb-only fix.

Solution

  1. Source a matching pair of H7 headlight units from a VW T6 or Caravelle; aim for revision F or G which use an improved DRL bulb holder that resists overheating.
    • Part numbers cited in the thread: 7C2941005 (nearside) and 7C2941006 (offside). (verify part number before ordering)
  2. Replace the bulbs before installing the units to make access easier: fit H7 halogen bulbs for dipped and main beam, W21W bulbs in the DRL sockets, and H8 or H11 halogen bulbs in the fog light positions.
    • Do not fit H7 LED bulbs into these halogen housings as they are not road legal and produce dangerous glare for oncoming traffic.
  3. Remove the front bumper to reach the headlight mounting points.
    • Turn the steering to full lock and remove the Torx screws securing the front of each wheel arch liner to the bumper edge.
    • Remove the Torx screws along the underside of the bumper and the screws/clips along the top edge under the bonnet lip.
    • With all fasteners out, release the plastic retaining clips at each front corner by pulling the bumper outward at the wheel arches, then draw the bumper forward off its side guides. Disconnect any sensor/fog light wiring as it comes free.
    • (Verify bumper fastener torque values with VW dealer or workshop manual before refitting.)
  4. Unplug the existing H4 headlight units and plug in the H7 replacements — the wiring connectors are identical and no VCDS coding or error-clearing is needed.
  5. Refit the bumper, reconnecting any sensor/fog light wiring, and confirm all light functions work: DRL, dipped beam, main beam, and fog lights.
  6. Check and adjust the headlight beam alignment after fitting. New assemblies will rarely sit at the correct aim, and incorrect alignment is an MOT failure under DVSA rules as well as a dazzle hazard to oncoming drivers. Use the headlight adjusters to set the beam, or have the aim set on beam-setting equipment at a garage before driving at night.
