VW T6 H7 headlight bulb upgrade without replacing units

The Problem
A T6 Caravelle owner wanted to upgrade from halogen to better lighting but believed they needed to replace the entire headlight units to do so. They had H7 units already fitted and had not realised a bulb swap was all that was needed.
Solution
-
Check which headlight spec your T6 has before buying anything. The OEM hierarchy runs H4 (base), H7 (mid, dual halogen), then full LED (top) — if your van has non-LED, non-xenon headlights, they are almost certainly H7 units already and no unit replacement is needed.
-
Note the bulb layout inside each H7 housing. Each headlight contains two H7 bulbs — one for main beam and one for dipped beam — plus a separate W21W bulb for the DRL.
-
Swap the dipped beam H7 for a higher-output halogen upgrade such as a Philips or Osram Nightbreaker Laser bulb.
- High beam upgrade is considered less worthwhile by most owners.
- If you upgrade only the dipped beam and leave the main beam on a standard OEM halogen, be aware the two bulbs will have a slightly different colour temperature; this does not change the beam pattern (which is set by the reflector and lens) and is not itself an MOT failure, but for a consistent look you can fit the matching upgrade bulb in both positions. An MOT tester checks beam aim, pattern and that the light is white/yellow and not dazzling — colour mismatch between two legal halogen bulbs is not a fail point.
-
Leave the main beam and dipped beam as halogen rather than fitting H7 LED retrofit bulbs. Historically aftermarket H7 LED replacements were not road-legal in a halogen reflector housing and would fail the MOT, but the position has moved on: since 2021 some H7 LED replacement bulbs have gained UK/EU type approval under UN Regulation 128. Before fitting any LED retrofit, confirm the specific bulb is type-approved for road use and check the current DVSA MOT guidance, as a non-approved LED in a halogen housing will still fail (confirm this applies to your T6 generation).
-
Upgrade the DRL W21W bulbs to LED equivalents if desired, such as the Twenty20 LED W21W. This swap is legal and straightforward.
-
If you do need to source replacement headlight units, search Valeo part numbers 046714 and 046715 for new units, or look for used pairs at £150–£200 on eBay or Facebook Marketplace. Note the UK right-hand-drive convention: the driver sits on the offside (right) and the passenger on the nearside (left), so 'driver' and 'passenger' map to offside and nearside respectively. Confirm which Valeo number corresponds to the nearside (passenger) unit and which to the offside (driver) unit before ordering (verify part number before ordering).
- Look for the 'F' revision or later, which has an updated DRL bulb holder.
-
When buying used units, check the part number sticker for a revision letter (for example, 7E2941006G indicates a 'G' revision; no letter means the original version). Inspect listings carefully for broken mounting brackets and scratched lenses before purchasing.
