How to Wire Lazer Lamps to a VW T6 / T6.1 Headlight
3 June 2026Electrics
The Problem
The lamps were physically fitted to the grille, but the correct wires to splice into at the nearside headlight connector for the main beam trigger and DRL feeds could not be identified. A voltage tester showed 12V present at multiple pins simultaneously, making it impossible to pinpoint the right wires without further guidance. Crucially, the pin layout differs between the T6 (T6.0) and the facelift T6.1 — so the wire identified for one generation will not match the other.
Solution
- Confirm which Lazer lamp you are fitting before buying any wiring or relay — the range varies widely in current draw (for example a Triple-R 750/ST4 Evo unit draws roughly 10 A, while a Triple-R 1000 can draw around 25 A). The correct relay, fuse and wire gauge all depend on this figure. Check the draw on your lamp's spec sheet (verify the exact current rating against the manufacturer's data before ordering).
- Size the electrics to the lamp's draw. As a guide, fit a relay and fuse rated at least 25% above the lamp's total current draw — e.g. a ~10 A pair of lamps suits a 30 A automotive relay protected by a 15 A fuse on 1.5 mm² (16 AWG) feed cable, whereas a ~25 A pair needs a 40 A relay, a 30 A fuse and 2.5 mm² (13 AWG) or heavier cable. Confirm the final fuse and cable rating against the lamp manufacturer's wiring instructions, as Lazer supply or specify a loom and fuse rating per model.
- Mount the lamps in the front grille and route the wiring loom into the engine bay, keeping cables inside the existing protective sheathing where possible.
- Identify the main beam trigger at the nearside headlight connector. Use a circuit tester to probe the connector with main beam and dipped beam switched on separately. On the T6.1 the main beam trigger was found at pin 8 (white wire) — but this does NOT necessarily apply to the earlier T6 (T6.0), which uses a different headlight connector and pinout. If you have a T6.0, do not assume pin 8; probe each pin yourself with the circuit tester to confirm the live-on-main-beam wire before cutting anything (confirm this applies to your T6 generation).
- Splice the relay trigger wire into the identified main beam wire at the nearside headlight connector.
- With the DRLs active, use the circuit tester to locate the DRL feed at the same connector and splice in the position-light feed from the relay harness.
- Mount the relay in the engine bay in front of the battery.
- Run the switch wire(s) through the bulkhead into the cab and connect to a dash-mounted on/off switch for the main beam function.
- Power up the lamps and adjust the aim angle until the beam sits level before first use on the road. Note that under UK lighting regulations auxiliary driving lamps must only operate with main beam and must be wired so they extinguish when main beam is switched off.
