Wiring VW T6 LED Sportline Sidebars to Step Light
3 June 2026Electrics
The Problem
The LED Sportline sidebar kit (verify part number before ordering — confirm the kit and loom are listed for your specific van) came with a 3-pin connector that would not mate with the 5-pin plug on the main centre interior light. Note that the interior light connector can differ between the T6 (2015–2019) and T6.1 (2020+), so confirm the 5-pin mismatch described here applies to your T6 generation before sourcing the loom. The bars were physically fitted, but the wiring could not be completed because the supplied loom would not connect to the interior light.
Solution
- Abandon the interior light as the power source — the kit's 3-pin loom will not fit the 5-pin interior light plug. (Confirm this applies to your T6 generation — the connector may differ between T6 (2015–2019) and T6.1 (2020+).)
- Connect the sidebar wiring loom to the rear step light instead, which accepts the kit's connector. Identify the correct step light first: trace which sliding-door-side step unit you are working on, remove the step trim panel to expose the lamp, and confirm the feed/switched wire colours at the connector before tapping in (verify the exact wiring colours against your van, as these are not given in the kit instructions).
- Remove the entire step unit, not just the light cover, before routing the cable.
- This prevents the cable from being pinched or sitting on a rub spot.
- Feed the cable under the carpet or rubber mat and seat base using a probe, then run it around to the step light.
- Removing both seat bases and both B-pillar trims makes cable routing and step refitting noticeably easier.
- The kit includes an inline fuse in the loom (fuse rating not stated by the kit — verify the supplied amperage and confirm it suits the step light circuit before use). Because the step light circuit is already fused, the additional fuse is optional but can be left in for extra protection.
