Fitting a Mobiframe Composite Floor in a VW Transporter (T5/T6/T6.1)

The Problem
You want to fit a Mobiframe composite floor system in the rear of a VW Transporter. The practical challenges covered here are deadening the metal floor, edge finishing, seat belt pillar clearance, cutting around a rear heating pipe, and compatibility with RiB 130 slimline furniture. Note that floor ridge spacing, internal dimensions and seat belt pillar positions vary between the T5, T6 and T6.1 — confirm which generation you have, and whether it is the SWB or LWB variant, before cutting or buying a panel, because the 126 cm panel width is only meaningful once the wheelbase is known.
Solution
-
Fill the metal ridges of the van floor with Dodo Mat Deadn or an equivalent butyl or foam deadening mat, cut to fit between each ridge.
- Skipping this step risks the rigid composite panel resonating and increasing cabin drumming.
-
Source an electric cartridge gun before starting and use it to apply a high-grab bonding adhesive such as Sikaflex-512 Caravan or Stixall (or an equivalent polymer/MS-based construction adhesive rated for bonding board to metal).
- A manual cartridge gun causes severe forearm fatigue and risks the adhesive going off before the panel is positioned; electric guns are available cheaply online.
-
Work quickly once the adhesive is applied and position the panel immediately.
-
Remove the seat belt pillar trims before laying the floor to avoid scuffing them during installation. Pillar positions differ between T5, T6 and T6.1, so check yours before marking the panel.
-
Use a rotary tool to cut a small recess at the base of each seat belt pillar where the anchor bolt sits, so the floor panel sits flush around it.
-
If a rear heating pipe runs through the floor area, measure the pipe's outside diameter and use a hole saw sized roughly 10-15 mm larger to leave clearance — a 35-40 mm hole saw is a common starting point, but measure your own pipe and verify the size before cutting. Feed the panel over the pipe.
- This step requires two or three people to handle the panel safely.
-
Once the floor is laid, finish the perimeter edge using a p-trim or bead edge trim strip, available from DIY stores.
- A rubber insert version can be wedged into the gap for a cleaner finish and to prevent dirt ingress.
-
Trim any vinyl overhang around fixed items such as the driver's seat base using a sharp knife; in less visible areas the overhang can be left.
-
Caution: do not assume RiB 130 slimline units will fit. The Mobiframe panel is 126 cm wide and RiB 130 slimline compatibility has not been confirmed — measure your installed floor width and check it against the unit's mounting dimensions, ideally dry-fitting or confirming with the supplier before purchase.
- The 126 cm floor has been used successfully with custom 330 mm side units, leaving approximately 1,200 mm of bed width.
