VW T6 pulling left: front tyre swap fixes the pull

3 June 2026Wheels & Tyres

The Problem

The van consistently pulled to the left despite two or more Hunter wheel alignments that returned all readings within VW tolerances. The owner had ruled out road camber and crosswind as factors through extended motorway testing. The diagnostic steps below apply to both the T6 (2015–2019) and the T6.1 (2019–present), as the front axle and tyre-drag behaviour are shared across the generation.

Solution

  1. Before booking more alignment work, swap the two front wheels left-to-right across the axle.
    • Tyre drag bias is a documented cause of pull on T6s and does not show up on alignment printouts.
  2. Road test immediately after the swap on a flat, straight road to see if the pull has gone or reversed direction.
    • If the pull reverses and now goes right, the tyre itself is the cause; replace or move that tyre to the rear.
  3. If the pull remains after the tyre swap, return to a Hunter alignment and specifically ask the technician to correct the rear thrust angle before touching any front settings.
    • Several owners found rear toe imbalance was the root cause; the thrust angle must be squared first or front adjustments will not hold.
  4. If correcting the thrust angle does not resolve it, ask for the subframe position to be checked on the alignment rig.
    • In some cases the subframe is found to be physically offset; adjusting it on the Hunter machine can cure the pull completely.
