VW T6 Aux Heater to Parking Heater Conversion Guide

3 June 2026Camper Conversions

The Problem

The factory Webasto auxiliary heater only activates automatically when ambient temperature drops below roughly 4–5°C and cannot be triggered manually or remotely to pre-heat the cabin and engine on demand. Owners attempting the conversion were unsure which firmware version to flash and which receiver module variant would work with a heater ECU carrying the A hardware revision. Because flashing the wrong firmware can destroy the ECU, it is critical to confirm whether your van is a T6 (2015–2019) or T6.1 (2019+) before proceeding — the firmware file and receiver part numbers listed here were verified on a T6, and you must confirm they apply to your generation by VIN before ordering or writing anything.

Solution

  1. Confirm your van's generation first — T6 (2015–2019) or T6.1 (2019+). The firmware file and receiver part numbers in this guide were used on a T6; if you have a T6.1, verify the correct firmware revision and receiver part numbers against your VIN with a VW dealer or heater specialist before proceeding (verify part numbers before ordering).
  2. Flash the heater ECU using ODIS-E with the firmware file FL_7E0963272B__0009.frf — this is VW firmware, not Webasto firmware, and it enables parking heater remote-start functionality.
    • If your ECU shows hardware revision 273A, you still need this flash; VCDS adaptation alone cannot enable parking heater mode.
  3. Fit a telestart receiver module — both 3Q0963513 and 5Q0963513A variants are compatible; the trailing letter in the part number does not affect function.
  4. Connect the matching keyfob remote and antenna. Verify keyfob-to-receiver compatibility before ordering: cross-reference the receiver part number against the matching telestart keyfob part number in the VW parts catalogue (ETKA) using your VIN, or ask a VW dealer or heater specialist to confirm the keyfob frequency and coding match your specific receiver model. The remote must match the receiver — a mismatched fob will not pair.
  5. If you do not want a remote keyfob, wire a momentary push button to pin 4 of the receiver module instead — this gives a simple in-cabin on switch with no additional pairing required.
  6. Supply 12V to the receiver through a piggyback fuse tap using a 1A fuse.
