T6 phone mount: flush MagSafe holder in a button blank

3 June 2026Vehicle Faults

The Problem

You want a tidy, non-wobbly phone mount without bulky arms, vent clips, or cables on show. Off-the-shelf vent and windscreen mounts either feel flimsy, obstruct dash controls, or risk breaking the AC vent slats.

Solution

  1. Buy a Yoshi MagSafe car mount of the variant whose magnet disc unscrews from the bracket via a threaded rear stud (verify the exact model has a rear-threaded magnet disc before ordering — not all variants in the range do). Disassemble it completely, leaving just the magnet disc with its small rear screw, and discard the arm and bracket.
  2. Source a spare VW dash button blank that fits an unused switch aperture in your van. Note that the T6 and T6.1 use different dash architectures, and the button-blank aperture dimensions may differ between the two generations — confirm the blank matches your specific T6 or T6.1 generation, and use the OEM part number for your generation's blank when ordering (verify part number before ordering).
  3. Measure the thread diameter of the magnet's rear screw and select a drill bit to match it — most MagSafe magnet studs are a small machine-screw thread (commonly around M3–M4), so drill a clearance hole slightly larger than the measured screw diameter. Measure your screw and confirm the thread size before drilling (verify screw thread size before drilling).
  4. Screw the magnet disc into the hole from the front of the blank so it sits flush.
    • The screw thread built into the magnet assembly makes this a direct fit with no adhesive needed.
  5. Cut small packers from thin rigid plastic (e.g. offcuts of ~1–2 mm ABS or styrene sheet, built up to the thickness needed to fill the gap) and fit them behind the button blank to spread the rear plastic and prevent flex when you press a phone against the magnet. Trim the packer thickness to suit the depth behind your specific blank (verify required packer thickness against your fitted blank).
  6. Clip the finished blank into the empty switch aperture in the dash.
    • The result is a strong, flush, cable-free mount with no wobble or slip.
