VW T6.1 blind spot detection retrofit step by step

The Problem
The 2022 VW T6.1 panel van had no factory Side Assist (blind spot detection or rear cross traffic alert) fitted. You source the radar units and mirror components and undertake the full wiring and coding retrofit yourself. Before starting, confirm your specific T6.1 has a gateway variant that will accept Side Assist coding — not every T6.1 supports the retrofit, and a vehicle with the wrong gateway, missing pre-wiring, or the wrong electrical package will not complete the coding step (confirm this applies to your T6.1 with VW parts/dealer or a VCTool specialist before buying components).
Solution
- Before buying anything, verify your T6.1's gateway variant and electrical package will support Side Assist coding — check your vehicle's build/PR codes against the Side Assist requirement (confirm with a VW dealer or VCTool specialist if unsure). A T6.1 without the correct gateway will not support the coding step.
- Source the two Side Assist radar modules — one left, one right. These are the hardest component to source correctly, so order against the exact OEM part numbers for your vehicle's build rather than by description alone (verify the radar module part numbers against your VIN with a VW parts department before ordering). Fit one radar unit at a time — start with the passenger side, confirm the plug connector is fully terminated, then repeat for the driver's side.
- Source mirror caps with built-in LED indicator modules and build wiring harnesses for both mirror housings. Caps and LED modules are available from The OEM Shop (verify the mirror cap and LED module part numbers for your T6.1 before ordering).
- Route both mirror harnesses inside the dash area and pin them to the relevant fuse way and gateway module connector.
- Splice into the CAN bus wires at the gateway module and connect the SC46 5A KL15a ignition supply wire at the fusebox. This fuse way is extremely tight to access; insert an offcut of wire first to confirm correct orientation before fitting the live wire.
- Code the radar modules using VCTool. Load the correct Side Assist dataset for your vehicle into each radar module (note the exact dataset name/ID required for your T6.1 build — confirm with a VCTool specialist before coding, as the wrong dataset will prevent the system from functioning).
- Drive approximately 500 miles to allow the modules to complete their dynamic self-calibration — no separate manual calibration procedure is required.
