T6 Factory LED Headlights Blue Tinge — Is It Normal? (T6 & T6.1)
3 June 2026Electrics
The Problem
The owner noticed a bluish or rainbow-coloured edge on their 2019 T6 Kombi headlights and could not work out whether the bulbs could be swapped out. They were unsure whether they had aftermarket H7 LED bulbs fitted into a halogen reflector housing or genuine factory-fitted LED units. This matters because, on the T6, LED headlamps were not standard across the whole range — they were fitted as standard on higher trims (Highline) and available as a factory option on others, so a 2019 T6 can legitimately have either halogen (H7/H15) reflector units or factory LED units depending on the original build spec. The only reliable way to confirm exact factory fitment is to check the original build specification against the VIN with a VW Commercial Vehicles dealer.
Solution
-
Identify what you actually have before doing anything else. Genuine factory LED units have no traditional reflector bowl or removable bulb behind a circular access cap — instead the main beam/dip appears as a uniform illuminated lens or LED module, usually with a slim LED daytime-running-light strip integrated along the top edge of the housing. Look for: the absence of a round rubber bulb-access cover on the back of the lamp, a sealed housing, and a moulded 'LED' or matrix-style marking on the lens or housing. By contrast, an H7 LED retrofit will sit inside an ordinary halogen reflector bowl — you will see a circular reflector behind the lens, a removable cap on the rear, and an aftermarket bulb base with a separate driver/canbus box wired in. If in doubt, removing the rear cap is the giveaway: a factory LED unit has no serviceable bulb there, a retrofit does.
-
Factory LED headlamps do not contain a replaceable main light-source bulb — the LED elements are built into the housing and are not individually serviceable.
- The only swappable bulb in the unit is the indicator (and, where fitted, the side/parking lamp).
-
If the LED module itself fails or shows physical damage, the complete headlamp assembly must be replaced rather than an individual bulb. There is no genuine VW part number quoted here because the correct assembly depends on whether the vehicle is a pre-facelift T6 or a T6.1, left- or right-hand drive, and the exact LED specification fitted at build. Quote your VIN to a VW Commercial Vehicles parts department to get the correct OEM headlamp part number, or source a genuine/OE-equivalent unit from a VW parts factor against that VIN (verify part number before ordering). Note that LED headlamps are a high-value item, so check insurance/warranty cover before purchasing.
-
A bluish or rainbow-coloured tinge visible on the top edge of factory LED headlamps is normal and not a sign of a fault — it is an optical artefact of the LED lens/DRL strip and does not indicate damage or degradation. This behaviour applies to both the pre-facelift T6 LED unit and the revised T6.1 facelift headlamps (the T6.1 uses a different, restyled LED lamp but exhibits the same harmless edge tinge). (Confirm which generation you have, as the replacement assemblies are not interchangeable between T6 and T6.1.)
