Retrofit hill descent control switch on VW T6.1

3 June 2026Vehicle Faults

The Problem

The T6.1 was delivered without a working hill descent or traction control disable switch despite the handbook listing one, leaving the owner unable to switch off ESC in snow or off-road conditions. Gateway coding changes were tried first but failed, and one brake module change triggered a vacuum sensor fault that had to be reversed.

Solution

Note on terminology: VW refers to this feature as Hill Descent Control (HDC) in the handbook, while the diagnostic coding and the dashboard switch are labelled Hill Descent Assist (HDA). HDC and HDA are the same feature — the steps below use HDA to match what you will see on the switch and in OBDeleven/VCDS.

  1. Connect OBDeleven or VCDS and open module 03 Brakes long coding. Set byte 18 bit 0 to 1 and byte 18 bit 1 to 1.
    • Every T6.1 ABS coding is unique; read and record your original values before making any change.
  2. If you previously changed the Gateway FPA_Funktion_HDC setting, restore it to its original value — that change has no effect on HDA.
  3. Run a signal wire from ABS module connector pin 9 to the switch location in the dashboard.
    • Before fitting the switch, briefly touch the free end of the wire to an ignition-live feed to confirm HDA activates, proving the coding change worked.
  4. Install the OEM HDA switch into the dashboard blank.
    • On a T6.1 the switch is sold as a three-piece set including diff lock and ASC Off (verify part number before ordering); on a T6 it is a standalone switch.
  5. Connect the signal wire to pin 4 on the switch connector and ensure the sealing plug is fitted at the ABS connector end.
  6. Test on a steep hill at low speed — the HDA icon glows slightly brighter when active and the brakes hold the vehicle at walking pace.
