VW T6 weak H4 headlight fix with aftermarket V3 units

3 June 2026Electrics

The Problem

The stock H4 headlights on the VW T6 produce poor light output, making night driving difficult. The owner who started this thread had not yet carried out any fix and was researching whether the Vee Dub H9, Travelinlite, or OEM H7 replacement units were road-legal and worthwhile. The fitting steps below are therefore not from a single verified install — they are aggregated from several other owners who reported fitting the V3 units, so confirm details against the supplier's own fitting instructions before ordering.

Solution

  1. Source a pair of aftermarket V3 headlight units for the T6 from TransporterHQ. You must specify the correct left-hand-drive or right-hand-drive (UK = RHD) fitment when ordering, as the beam pattern is dipped to the kerb side — fitting an LHD unit on a UK van will dazzle oncoming traffic and fail the MOT. (No catalogue SKU / part number is published for these units — verify the exact part number and LHD/RHD fitment with TransporterHQ before ordering.)

  2. Understand the bulb change before fitting. The factory T6 housing uses a single H4 dual-filament bulb (one bulb provides both main and dipped beam). The V3 units are different: they have two separate bulb sockets — an H1 bulb for the main beam and an H7 bulb for the dipped beam. This is not a direct H4 swap, so do not expect a single bulb to carry over. Reports describe fitting H1 Night Breaker bulbs in the main-beam socket and H7 LED bulbs in the dipped-beam socket.

  3. (Optional) Owners report total spend of around £558 for the V3 units plus both bulb sets. An HID kit was reported by another owner as a faultless alternative to LED dipped-beam bulbs — but see the safety note below regarding UK road-legality.

  4. Remove the stock H4 headlight housings and bolt the V3 units in their place.

  5. Adjust beam height using the cabin beam-height regulator and verify aim against a flat wall before driving. Have the aim checked professionally if you are unsure, as the MOT tester will measure it.

  6. If your V3 units support it, choose the indicator sweep style — sequential or standard flash — which becomes available as a setting once the units are fitted.
