Winter tyre sizing and fitment guide for VW T6 T32

3 June 2026Wheels & Tyres

The Problem

The owner ran 265/40R20 summer tyres on a lowered T32 and wanted a separate winter wheel-and-tyre combination but did not know what wheel size would clear the larger T32 brakes or match the rolling circumference. They also had factory direct TPMS, which raised the question of whether a second set of sensors and coding would be needed for the winter wheels.

Solution

  1. Choose 18-inch steel wheels — they clear the standard T32 brakes without spacers, and the taller sidewall benefits winter grip more than keeping 20-inch wheels.
    • 17-inch wheels offer no meaningful grip advantage over 18s, so go with whichever is cheaper.
  2. Fit 255/45R18 winter tyres — this is the factory winter size for the T6 and clears standard T32 brakes.
    • If you have an aftermarket large-brake kit (such as a 362mm Brembo), a 10mm spacer front and 15mm rear is required.
  3. For a similar rolling circumference to the 265/40R20 setup, equivalent alternative sizes are 235/60R17, 235/55R18, or 235/50R19.
    • Check load ratings carefully before ordering — T32 requires at least a 103-rated tyre.
  4. Tyre brands confirmed to work and mentioned positively: Continental WinterContact (103-rated confirmed), Goodyear Ultra Grip, Gislaved NordFrost Van 2.
  5. If your vehicle has factory direct TPMS, you will need a second set of coded TPMS sensors fitted to the winter wheels — driving without them triggers a permanent pressure warning and an MOT failure if unresolved.

Safety Notes

  • Fitting wheels without TPMS sensors on a direct TPMS vehicle disables pressure monitoring entirely — check tyre pressures manually before every journey.
  • Wheel spacers change bearing load and handling; torque wheel nuts to specification and recheck after the first 50 miles.
