VW Transporter T6 tyre replacement recommendations

1 June 2026Wheels & Tyres

The Problem

The owner has uneven tyre wear across axles (2.6mm front, 7.0mm rear) on a VW Transporter T6, plus a nail-induced slow puncture on the rear nearside. They had already been running Hankook OEM tyres and were seeking better alternatives.

Solution

  1. For all-season or mixed-use on a 2WD campervan or van, the Michelin Agilis CrossClimate is the most consistently recommended tyre, with owners reporting strong wet grip, low road noise, and good all-condition performance.
    • Look for Black Circle 25%-off-4-tyre deals combined with Michelin cashback (£100) to reduce the cost of a set of 215/60/17 to under £900.
  2. For van-rated daily use, the Falken Linam Van01 in 215/60/17 is a strong option on the T6 T32, with confirmed even wear at 15,000 miles and lower cost than Continental OEM.
  3. For a direct upgrade from OEM Hankooks, the Maxxis Vansmart MCV+ is recommended — quieter, more comfortable, better grip on mud and wet grass, and no uneven wear reported.
  4. For performance or low-profile fitments, the Uniroyal RainSport 5 offers good wet performance and value, and the Pirelli Scorpion Asymmetrico (275/40/20) improves ride quality over Continental Sport Contact 5.
  5. Check tyre pressures monthly and inspect wear patterns, especially after any wheel or tyre swap.
    • One owner destroyed a full set of Avon ZX7s in 7,000 miles due to over-inflation causing centre-tread wear while edges retained tread.
  6. Be aware that upsizing from 16-inch steel wheels (215/65/16) to 18-inch alloys (255/45/18) can drop fuel economy noticeably — one owner recorded a fall from 14.8 km/l to 12.6 km/l on a semi-loaded van.
    • Running a narrower winter tyre size (e.g. 235/55/18 instead of 255/45/18) can partially recover fuel efficiency in colder months.
  7. Avoid Dannovit tyres — owners describe dead feel, no feedback, and a squirm under load that makes them unsuitable for any Transporter fitment.
